Top 5 Email Marketing Best practices
1. Don’t let AI write your entire newsletter.
A strict copy & paste out of ChatGPT usually results in robotic-sounding emails that are missing YOUR human-ness (unless you’ve done a phenomenal job training your AI), and are almost "too perfect" to be authentically engaging.
Instead:
Ask AI to provide you with an outline for an email.
Use AI to help you develop summaries or journaling prompts in your email.
Use AI as a brainstorming partner while writing your email.
Ask AI to clean up your writing and suggest improvements.
2. Clean your list regularly.
Every 90 days (at a minimum), segment out your cold subscribers (I segment out anyone who hasn’t opened an email in the past 90 days) and delete them. This will keep your open rates high and reduce digital clutter.
Remember not to delete cold subscribers if they're in a program and need to be on your list to get updates.
3. Pick a consistent sending schedule and stick to it.
My newsletter, The Sunday Brunch, lands in my subscribers' inboxes every Sunday morning and has done so for the past 55 weeks. Consistency does not equal a high frequency! Pick a sending frequency that YOU can stick to and then prioritize making sure you get it done. Number your newsletters so you can visually SEE the progress you’re making.
4. Authenticate your domain & sign up for Google Postmaster Tools.
Make sure you’re using a domain-based email address to send your newsletter and that you’ve authenticated your domain. Most email service providers have software that can automatically set this up for you! Google Postmaster is a great way to keep an eye on the health of your sending domain.
5. Keep it simple.
You don’t have to use a fancy template or anything. A simple format will do, and it helps to keep your email out of spam. Send emails from your first name, and imagine you’re sending an email to your friend as you write it. Simple is almost always better.
